The story of how we became surrounded by plastic is one of accidental discoveries, high-stakes competition, and a relentless search for ways to improve on nature. Long before the 20th century transformed plastic into a global staple, the foundations were being laid by chemists looking for simple solutions to resource shortages.
The alchemy of the 19th century
Before the era of synthetic polymers, people relied on natural materials that were plastic, meaning they could be heated and molded. Materials like animal horn, tortoiseshell, and shellac were common, but as the industrial revolution gained momentum, these natural resources began to dwindle.
The real spark for modern plastic came from a shortage of billiard balls. In the mid-1800s, billiard balls were made of ivory, and the demand was so high it threatened elephant populations. In 1862, Alexander Parkes demonstrated Parkesine, the first man-made plastic derived from cellulose. While Parkes struggled to find commercial success, his work paved the way for John Wesley Hyatt, who added camphor to create celluloid. Though it was famously flammable and not quite right for billiard balls, celluloid became a revolutionary substitute for ivory and tortoiseshell in products like combs, buttons, and piano keys.
The dawn of the synthetic age
In 1907, the world of materials changed forever when Leo Baekeland invented Bakelite. Unlike celluloid, Bakelite was 100 percent synthetic, containing no molecules found in nature. It was a thermoset plastic, meaning that once it was molded and cooled, it wouldn't melt or burn, making it the perfect insulator for the rapidly electrifying world. From shiny black telephones to radio casings and kitchenware, Bakelite ushered in a new age where humans were no longer constrained by the limits of nature.
A world transformed by war
The mid-20th century saw an explosion of new polymers. Between the two World Wars, chemists developed many of the names we recognize today: polyvinyl chloride (PVC) in 1927, polystyrene in 1931, and nylon in 1935.
World War II acted as a massive catalyst for production. When natural materials like rubber and silk became scarce, plastics filled the gap. Nylon replaced silk for parachutes, and Plexiglass became the standard for aircraft windows. When the war ended, this massive industrial capacity shifted toward the consumer market. Plastics burst into the home through colorful Tupperware in 1946, vinyl LP records in 1948, and the BIC ballpoint pen in 1950.
Plastic growth and the environmental shift
By the 1960s, plastic was no longer a high-tech novelty. It was now a household material that had become ubiquitous. The invention of the PET bottle in 1973 further cemented its dominance in packaging.
However, this era of unblemished optimism began to fade as the consequences of mass production became visible. Scientists first recorded marine plastic debris as early as 1931, and by the 1960s, public awareness of environmental issues began to grow. Today, the history of plastic continues to be written through innovations in recycling technologies, materials that don’t contain microplastics, and a global effort to balance the material's utility with its environmental footprint.
